Support Elijah Smith - Anti Militarist Prisoner

"I don't feel I'm going to do anything illegal tonight, but I'm going to go into an arms factory and smash it up to the best of my ability so that it cannot actually produce munitions and these very dirty bombs that have been provided to the Israeli army so that they can kill children. The time for talking has gone too far. I'm not a writer, I'm just a person from the community and I'm deeply disgusted.”

Excerpt from a statement recorded by Elijah Smith, one of the decommissioners,
before breaking in to the factory.

After the action four people were released on strict bail conditions. Another was released five months later after spending time on remand. They are not allowed to talk to each other. Messages of support for them can be sent to tom_w@boardermail.com

One decommissioner, Elijah Smith, is still on remand and could be there until trial:

Elijah is currently in Lewes Prison:
Elijah Smith, A3186AM, HMP Lewes , 1 Brighton Rd, Lewes, Sussex, BN7 1EA

For those who can visit, times are 2pm-4pm daily

Letters of support are always appreciated.

If you want to support Elijah financially, postal orders can be made out to HM Prison Service with his prisoner number
and your name and address.

News On Elijah:

July 2010 - The jury have still not delivered a verdict on Elijah, through 5 out of 6 of his co-defendants have been found not guilty. At 9.30pm on Wednesday 30th June around 30 people and a sound system walked around the perimeter of Lewes prison making as mush noise as possible in support. He is back in court on Friday 2nd July, hopefully to be found not guilty.

May 2010 - The Decommissioners trial has now been delayed until June 7th - Elijah will remain on remand throughout the trial.

April 2010 -

Firstly, as Elijah ‘James’ Smith approaches 14 months locked up on remand, without a trial of course, he’s been given a new prison number – A3186AM.

Do please send in your letters of support and solidarity, and news of any campaigns and stuff you’ve been involved in. Send an SAE too if you’d like a reply. Write to: Elijah Smith – A3186AM, HMP Lewes, 1 Brighton Rd, Lewes, East Sussex, BN7 1EA.

Lastly, some good news. It appears the prosecutors will not be appealing the outcome of the court hearing on 1 March, which means the Decommissioners will be able to present the defence in court that they have always argued for. Game on.

December 6th 2009

Having appeared at Lewes Crown Court for a pre-trial hearing at the end of November,
Elijah has been moved to Lewes prison. You can write to him at the address shown above.

10 months on remand, November 19th 2009

10 months ago yesterday, on 18 January 2009, Elijah (James) Smith and 5 other
anti-militarists from Bristol were arrested in Brighton.

They had spent the previous night decommissioning the EDO/MBM/ITT factory in Brighton
in an attempt to stop it providing parts for weapons being used by the Israeli army to
bomb civilians in Gaza. Nobody was injured or harassed during their action, which
was one of property damage/sabotage. They did not resist arrest.

Exactly 10 months on and Elijah Smith is still on remand. Yes thats right – 10 months
in prison without trial. And it looks as if he is likely to remain in prison until the trial actually
starts, probably on 17 May 2010, by which time he’ll have spent 16 months on remand.
